Want to eat the best ice cream ever created? Visit the Broom's Bloom Dairy stall at the Saturday Waverly Farmers' Market. They bring several of their available flavors already packed and ready to go. They don't really have signage with their name, but tend to be on the northwest portion of the market. They also sell other products, such as cheese, at their stall which I'm sure are amazing, but I just go for the ice cream. "Dirt" is our favorite, lots of chunky, chocolately goodness.

Tempted? As good as their ice cream is out of the Waverly market, it tastes even better if you buy it right on their farm. An easy drive up 95 to exit 80, you take MD543 four miles and look on your left. There is a nice place to eat inside during inclement weather, but I recommend sitting outside. Basically your view is fields, woods and the barns where the cows live and do their thing. There are rocking chairs and picnic tables and a little grassy area for kids to play around in. (Pets are not allowed.) Service is invariably friendly, sometimes local young people, sometimes older folks. I've met the owner working behind the counter. Prices are reasonable. They also sell products from other local farms as well as sandwiches, salads and quiche. They have many flavors of ice cream to choose from but not the same flavors every time and can run out so no guarantee that "dirt" will be there when you go. The good thing is that any flavor is good and you'd have a built in excuse to go again.

I love the utilitarian look, and tactile feel, of kraft paper. Not to mention the fact that it's a 100% natural, biodegradable product, which can be fully absorbed back into the earth with no adverse impact on nature or human health (source)- very important! Here is a super awesome tutorial on how to make your own upcycled mailing envelopes using a brown kraft grocery bag. What a great way to create packaging that really stands out to your customers, while also being earth friendly. You could even omit the upcycled plastic bag lining entirely, use 100% cotton thread, and you have a completely biodegradable mailing envelope that can be directly tossed into the compost bin! It doesn't get any better than that. : )

After taking the time to rest and reorganize this month, wander over to the Baltimore Museum of Art and check out the Print by Print exhibit, going on now through March 25th, 2012. More than 350 prints from the museum's permanent collection- one of the largest in the country- will be on display, including works by Marcel Duchamp, Roy Lichtenstein (pictured), Albrecht Durer, and many others. The exhibit is free and open to the public during museum hours. What a great opportunity to see so many amazing prints right in our own backyard!

No Sew Felt Flower Headband Tutorial

Here is a simple little project by Design by Night that does not require sewing abilities. So unholster that glue gun and get to crafting.

Supplies
5" square piece of felt for flower
3" square piece of green felt for leaves and backer
Headband
Hot glue gun
Scissors
Printer

Print out the pattern below. (Use the scale to make sure the print out is the correct size).
Using the large scalloped pattern, cut the shape out of your felt for the flower. Note: You can use the pattern more as a guide. You do not have to be precise when cutting the pattern, if you look at the picture below you will notice that I rounded out the "corners".
Cut a scalloped spiral (see fig. 3) in the circle trying to keep the thickness of the piece somewhat uniform. Keep in mind the circle doesn't have to be perfect.
Wrap the center upon itself to create a roll and dab a little hot glue on it to keep it in place. Continue to wrap the felt around the center.
Cut out the small circle and 2-leaf patterns using the green felt.
Glue the leaves onto the small circle backer.
Glue the backer with the leaves onto the back side of the headband.
Glue the flower on top of the backer making sure that the headband is sandwiched in between.

Tutorial: Five-Minute Tea Towel Apron

Before a cross-country trip to visit my family's old stomping grounds in Portland, Oregon this summer, I was frantically thinking about what to take as gifts for our hosts. A family of four, including two pre-teen kids, they are HUGE fans of Baltimore's own Berger Cookies, and I knew they'd be expecting me to bring them. I did, of course, but I wanted to include something a bit more unexpected. Everyone in the family cooks, so I decided to whip up some easy aprons out of supplies I had readily at hand: dish towels, grosgrain ribbon, and twill tape. This project literally could not be faster, and yet feels special and handmade when you give it as a gift.

For a one-size-fits-most apron, you'll need:

1 tea towel in the pattern of your choice. My inner textile junkie often leads me to buy tea towels for the fabric alone. The fact that they're functional, too, is an added bonus. If you don't have a huge stash of dish towels at your disposal, head to a thrift store or your nearest Target to stock up on cool prints for under $5 each. Be sure to wash and press any new materials.
6-7 ft. (72 - 84 in.) of grosgrain ribbon or twill tape. I used 1" wide ribbon, but you could use wider for a broader sash.
basic sewing supplies - pins, scissors, sewing machine, or needle and thread. I like to use a thread that is slightly lighter in color than the ribbon I'm using.

Instructions:

Fold towel in half along the long edge.
Fold ribbon in half and line up center point with folded top edge of the towel.
Unfold ribbon and pin so that the top edge of the ribbon aligns with the top edge of the towel.
Starting at the outer side edge of the towel, sew a top seam 1/8" in from top edge of ribbon and towel. Repeat with bottom edge of ribbon.
That's it! Wrap around your waist or the waist of a friend and start cooking!

Variations:

If you have another 10 minutes to spare, cut an 8x8" square out of contrasting fabric to make a handy pocket, a la this {beatrice + the bird} apron:
For a debatably more "masculine" version, cut the ribbon in half and sew one half to each short side of the apron. Or use twill tape instead of grosgrain.

Recyled Wrapping Paper Necklace

While you are unwrapping all those presents this holiday season remember to recycle that wrapping paper! Large pieces can be reused and smaller pieces can be made into cards, envelopes, accessories and more. To kick start those recycled wrapping paper ideas, Design by Night has created a tutorial for a wrapping paper necklace. You can easily take this tutorial and apply it to other accessories.

Supplies:
Wrapping Paper
White Glue
Scissors or X-acto Knife
Ruler
Chain
4-Jump Rings
2-eye head pins
1-Lobster Clasp
Jewelry Pliers
Hot Glue
Felt (that compliments wrapping paper)
Piece of paper
Pencil

Cut several pieces of wrapping paper 2” wide. Vary the size from 10” to 36”.
Take one of the pieces and fold it in half. Fold this half in half two more times making about a half inch high strip.
Starting at an end, start to roll the paper on itself to create a tight coil. The coil will be larger or smaller depending on the length of the paper.
When you get to the end, use the white glue to finish the coil. Hold in place until it is dry.
After you have several coils you like, on a piece of paper arrange the coils into a design. When you get a design you like trace around the outside of it to create a backer template.

Cut out the template and use it to cut out a piece of felt to use as a backer. Take your shapes and arrange them on the felt. Trim felt where necessary to avoid overhang.
Using the hot glue gun, glue the eye pins on opposite sides of the shape. This is how you will attach the chain to your paper pendant.
Hot glue the shapes to the felt backer.
Figure out how long you want your necklace and cut 2 pieces of equal chain.
Add a jump ring to one end of the chain and attach it to one of the eye head pins on the pendant. Repeat step with other side.
Attach jump rings to both open ends of chain, making sure to add the lobster clasp to one of them.

My three things: Gifts for Boys to Inspire Craftiness

I was reading one of two-year-old son’s favorite winter books, the truly lovely Shall I Knit You a Hat, by Kate Klise and M. Sarah Klise, the other day, and it made me think about crafting with kids. Specifically, it made me think of crafting with little boys. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of a young rabbit and his mother who, on the eve of a huge winter storm, decide to make wonderful and elaborate knitted hats for all their animal friends. Most of the adult crafters I know are women – often mothers – but I’d love for my son and other boys I know to follow in our footsteps. I fully intend to teach my boy to sew, knit, embroider, and make jewelry to the extent that he’s interested. Tutorial: Furoshiki

Furoshiki is the traditional Japanese method of using fabric to wrap gifts. It is a simple, eco friendly way to round out your gift giving during the holidays (or anytime), and is definitely a bonus for whoever is on the receiving end (they can reuse the fabric!). This red and white stripe satin furoshiki by Lucinda-Newton Dunn is a beautiful example. Get creative with scarves, tea towels, and/or scraps of fabric you might have laying around. Power Plant Lazer Show, Baltimore Life

We took our daughter down there one evening to see the lights and take in the beautiful decked out holiday harbor. To our delight we had a front row seat to the unbelievable lights, lasers, music and really intriguing projected imagery, right on the Power Plant building facade.

Tutorial - Ice Tiles

I came across this wonderful holiday tutorial on Craftberrybush blogspot for ice tiles. You start out by shaping an old vine wreath into individual letters and then place them in foil trays. You can add holly, berries and other decorations, then you pour water into them and freeze. Once they are frozen, remove from the tray and place the ice tiles outside to decorate your porch or front stairs. Try spelling out NOEL, your family name, LOVE, PEACE, the possibilities are endless. Of course, it needs to be cold enough outside that these won't melt right away!

What I'm Working On: Kitchen Tools

Early on, when all we had was a mini-lathe, Norm turned some ice cream scoops and pizza cutters for us to use, and to give as gifts to family and friends. We use our ice cream scoops every day (someone loves his ice cream!) and love the feel and look of using a real wood scoop.

Two years and two lathes later, we've decided to sell them on our Etsy shop and at craft shows (see below), and we've expanded the line beyond ice cream scoops and pizza cutters. We discovered a source for cheese planes and for really elegant, solid salad servers and have added both of them for sale as well.

We use a variety of woods for all of the implements, and the shapes of the handles vary as well, to accommodate different size hands. Here are some examples.

Insipirations: Fish Prints

Have you heard of fish prints? I was reminded of this strangely compelling craft form when I met a woman wearing a very fine example of it the other day. She'd bought it at some vacation spot she frequents, said she got a new one every year! Fish prints are made by painting an actual fish (colorful fish photo) and then pressing the fish onto paper or cloth (colorful fish print). It is thought that the technique originated in Japan in the 1800s as a way to record commercial fish catches, so many refer to the fish printing technique by its Japanese name "Gyotaku". Of course the original style does not involve bright colors on tshirts.

Barry Singer of Fish Fanatic has some really elegant examples of simple black prints on paper as well as more colorful work. (proud fisherman, traditional fish printing) Millstone Artworks has fish printed tshirts in soft, natural colors. (traditional fish print) As a craft activity for kids you don't get much better than going out, catching your very own fish, bringing it home, printing a tshirt from it to commemorate the event and then having it for dinner!

The MICA Art Market, sponsored by the MICA Alumni Association and Master of Professional Studies in the Business of Art and Design, provides an opportunity for holiday shoppers and collectors to find new works by emerging artists as well as collectibles from leading artists in their respective fields. Visitors will have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with the artists about their work while enjoying the market's lively atmosphere and supporting the local economy.

The market fosters student professional development and peer-to-peer networking, and provides funding for need-based student scholarships.

I got a commission a week or so ago for a sterling silver feather pendant. I was very excited because I love working with my saw. It seems the more detail needed to be cut the better for me. I did however find myself at that scary midway point where I was afraid to proceed. I loved the basic cut out but more detail was wanted so I hesitantly began after many drawings. I have to say, I am pretty happy with the results!

In the spirit of Small Business Saturday, I thought I would post about one of my favorite small shops in Historic Fells Point, Emporium Collagia. The owner is an artist with a distinct eye for the unique. She has been a fan of my electroformed pieces for a while and always has a nice array of necklaces to choose from! This holiday season, I am so very excited that she is offering her shoppers my new bronze collection!

Proprietor and Aritst Luana Kaufmann has a beautiful little shop at 1732 Thames Street along the waterfront strip in Fells Point. Her unique collage art prints are on display and for sale tucked in amongst an exquisite collection of hand picked interesting home goods and gifts from everywhere! Her store is a collage, in it's own right, it's always fun to see what new items she has to offer.

Hexie Attack!

I've succumbed to the paper-piecing bug. If the impending zombie virus is Z101, then the paper-piecing virus must be P1212, because it's about twelve times worse! I've turned into one of those people you see with snippets of thread on the hem of her sweater pulling out a bag of fabric bits and thread and scissors every time there's a chance to sit for more than five minutes. It's kind of ridiculous, but it's also vitally necessary if I'm going to get this done.

I've started with a massive stack of basted hexagon squares.

So far I have three strings stitched together. Eventually I'll have ten columns stitched up and will begin finagling them into a finished top.

It's already taken forever and I'm having serious doubts about having it finished by the December holidays, this year anyway.

I just love these guys and their dishware! I met Young Alexander at Artscape this past July and purchased a pair of itty bitty bowls from them. Then I came back for a few chevron plates that will adorn our dining room walls.

Their retro-inspired motifs are hand-painted and reminiscent of vintage diner ware which I am quite fond of! It's a great way to mix and match the old and the new in our kitchen cupboards.

Peacock Earring Tutorial

I can't go anywhere without seeing a pair of feather earrings. They seem to be really hot right now so I decided to whip up a pair. They are a very simple peacock feather pair, you should be able to get most of the supplies in your local craft store.

Supplies:
4 peacock eye feathers
Scissors
Hot Glue
1 Set of Wire Earring Hooks
2 Fold Over Crimp Ends
2 Jump Rings
Small Pliers (used for jewelry and delicate work)

Take 2 of your peacock feathers and trim the wispy eyelash like ends off of the rounded top and cut off the stem about an inch below the “eye” (see fig. 1).

Trim the two remaining feathers similar to the others, except you will be cropping closer to the eye, see fig. 3 for a reference.

Use the glue gun and add a bead of glue down the spine of one of the trimmed eye only feathers. Glue this feather on top of one of the larger feathers (see fig. 3). Repeat this step with second set of feathers

Place a small bit of glue to the very tip of the feather cluster on the front side and glue a fold over crimp bead to it. Make sure the font of the crimp bead is towards the front of the feathers.

Note: This will not hold the feather in place, however it will help to steady the feather when you are closing the crimp ends.

Using the pliers, fold down the crimp ends so they tightly fit the feathers. Repeat this step with the second set of feathers.

Using the jump rings, attach the feather cluster to the earring wire.

Scarves are one of my favorite accessories- even in summer I manage to find a few lovely lightweight scarves to wear, but in fall and winter the possibilities for scarf wearing are at their best, and Etsy stores feature a really wonderful variety. Here are just a few.
How cool is this? It has a very ethnic and safari like feel to me, and is unmistakably artisan made.

In 1999 AnimeUSA was started by anime fans in Northern Virginia. In 2004 AnimeUSA became a non profit educational organization to promote Japanese culture and arts.

This year it is being held at the Hyatt Regency in Arlington, VA. It is running on November 18-20. AnimeHatmania is happy to be in Artist Alley selling hats and origami jewelery. I always attend cons with my two girls who are fantastic fans. We always take pictures of other con goers.

Since we have not attended this anime convention before I am including some pictures from other cons so you can visualize the flavor of these events. I am including pictures from two other show I have been in Artist Alley at: Otakon and Katsucon. The cons generally run for three days and have between 5,000 to 35,000 attendees.

Yep, mother and daughter team Diana Ross and Dawn Bradford are helping breast cancer survivors better manage their physical and mental health by teaching them Breast Cancer Yoga. Their website has all the how-to's for doing specific poses that can actually help your body and mind stay healthy after breast cancer treatment. The website also has recommendations for healthy eating and natural products that can be incorporated into your daily lifestyle.

Of course, practicing yoga and relaxing breathing techniques has the potential to benefit everyone, so don't be afraid to try it out, breast cancer survivor or not. Actively maintaining a healthy balance in life, both mentally and physically, is one of the cornerstones of human health.

Tiny Owl's Magic Attic is the knit pattern shop of American singer Stephanie Dosen. Currently residing in London with her "unicorn, two cats & a hefty yarn stash riddled with gnome families", Dosen offers up whimsical knitwear patterns ranging from big bow scarves and fox stoles, to antler hats and bear sweaters.

Although I consider my knitting skills to be novice at best, Dosen's patterns, coupled with her woodland-backed photography, are definitely inspiration to pick those needles up again.

Part of the draw, I think, is also the childhood nostalgia her pieces seem to draw from. Who doesn't like to remember days when hiking through the woods, building tree forts, and pretending you had special relationships with little wild animals who crossed your path was a regular occurrence? Dosen's creations are a wonderful, heartfelt reminder to stay playful and connected to that part of ourselves, as well as to the magical world nature and animals around us.

Maybe it conjures up memories of my folk dancing days with the polish folk dancing troupe Ojczyzna in Baltimore during Polish festivals in Patterson Park. It may be called Day of the Dead but to me it feels like a celebration of life. Baltimore with Babes: Clark's Elioak Farm

If you're looking for a way to celebrate fall with your family, look no farther than Clark's Elioak Farm, located just off of Route 29 in Howard County. This family-owned farm boasts every farm-related activity under the sun, from a pumpkin patch to a petting farm. You'll meet (among others) a miniature donkey, pigs, goats, and even an emu. For an extra fee, you can enjoy a pony ride, a hayride on the famous Trusty the Tractor, or a turn on the new Cow Train, where your child will ride in his or her own wheeled "cow" pulled by a tractor.
The Clarks offer lots of special events on fall weekends, but one of the most enjoyable is their annual Pumpkin Chunkin', which falls this year on November 5th and 6th. Bring the jack o' lantern from your front porch and take your turn launching it across the farm with their specially made catapult. Seriously fun.

The old fairytale amusement park that used to live on Route 40, where John Waters filmed scenes for Crybaby, was abandoned for many years, and its beloved attractions were falling into ruin. The Clark family has worked with local conservation groups to painstakingly transport and restore multiple elements from the classic park, and you'll be happy to see your kids zip down the slide in the Old Lady's Shoe or take a peek into the home of the Three Little Bears. The hayride loops through all of the Enchanted Forest attractions.

You can feel good about supporting this 540-acre family farm, which has long championed conservation and offers the community locally grown produce, grass-raised beef, pastured lamb, cut-your-own flowers and herbs, and local cheeses and butter.

Admission is $5, free for infants under 12 months, and $4.50 with a AAA card. Hay rides, pony rides, and the cow train are each $2 extra.

It seems like I read every other day about a study showing this or that will help prevent cancer, or lower the rate of recurrence. As a 1.5 yr breast cancer survivor of a very aggressive form of breast cancer (triple-negative) I read these with much interest. There are no drugs I can take to help be reduce my chance of metastasis except the age old approach of diet, exercise and stress reduction.

Good methods to live by – diet, exercise and stress reduction – good for just about anyone for just about anything.

I like the philosophy to living and eating in this book: 50 Secrets of the World’s Longest Living People:

In this book, the author has interviewed, collated and summarized the living and eating habits and foods of the people who live the longest. SPOOKY PUMPKIN PANCAKES

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 egg
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons vinegar
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
Whipped Butter
Fresh Blueberries
Strawberry Jam or Jelly

Directions for Cooking:

In a bowl, mix together the milk, pumpkin, egg, oil and vinegar. Combine the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, allspice, cinnamon, ginger and salt in a separate bowl. Stir into the pumpkin mixture just enough to combine.
Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot.

Directions for Decorating:

Using a melon scoop, scoop out two balls of whipped butter and place them on pancakes.
Make groves in the butter with a toothpick and fill with strawberry jam or jelly.
Place fresh blueberries in the center for pupils.

Summit of Awesome Wrap-up

Yes it was awesome!
My mind is still reeling from attending the Summit of Awesome last week! (If you're not sure what the Summit of Awesome is, click this link.) The panels they had were so helpful and I'm really excited to try and up my game this year!

Highlights for me were meeting and learning about hiring help from Figs and Ginger. Yes, they are even cuter and amazing in person! Jon Wye- ( you probably know his work, but don't know that you know his work!) and WIllo from Willotoons- this girl really knows her stuff and is so warm and friendly.

Jay McCarroll, from Project Runway, was there and gave a little speech about his journey post-Runway. He has been hitting the craft circuit this past year and says he relates to the "craft world" much more than the "fashion world".

Another highlight was getting to pitch a book idea to a literary agent! I know! Crazy right!?! She gave me some great advice and was very receptive to the ideas I had. I'm not quite ready to get started on anything yet, but it was such a terrific experience to be able to discuss an idea with someone who knows that world and how it works. Sorry if I'm being ramble-y but it really was kind of exciting and overwhelming to be around so many creative people!

Life, Etsy, Crafting and Cancer

Crafting, and in particular crafting on etsy has been a lifesaver for me these past 3 years. Looking back, I
can now smile and recognize what a joy it is to be where I am today, doing what I do.

I lost a long held corporate job in late 2007. Yikes, how does a gal over 50 with no degree go up against
so many other younger and educated people all vying for the same job? After an extremely comfortable
position, how do you start over? It took me about a month to decide I did not want to continue in
corporate America. I had no interest in going back to school or becoming more tech savvy. All I could
think about was getting back to my “creative” roots. (I was a full time craftsperson in the 80’s!)

I bought a sewing machine so I could begin to learn to machine quilt – both for relaxation and for the
inspiration to be doing something creative again. Ideas and product began to flow. It was exhilarating
to be back in the arts and crafts world. I loved being on the crafts show circuit again and loosing hours
in the studio exploring ideas and techniques. Life was good!

…and then I felt it….the lump…the tests…the waiting…..I had breast cancer.

Cancer. You don’t know how you’re going to react when told this. I was actually very calm and
accepting and quickly hunkered down to prepare myself for what lay ahead. Holiday craft shows for
2009 were cancelled. Surgery was in Dec 2009, followed by chemo and radiation which lasted until July
2010.

Crafting. It became a wonderful way to divert my attention from the hardships over cancer treatment.
I was able to explore working with dying fabric and yarns, felting, quilting and weaving. Etsy provides
a huge resource of information and resources on how to build, market, valuate and nurture a crafts
business. The information available was a great way to keep my mind alive while my body felt so bad.
I honestly do not know what I would have done had this community not been there. My family does
not live close by, and it was so helpful to have the support, encouragement and friendship from my etsy
BEST team and others I’ve met throughout the artistic community.

I am now back on feet, one year cancer free! Etsy is still a huge part of my life, nearly all my business is
done through etsy and I look forward to getting back out on the crafts show circuit again!

I am so joyful that the BEST team has chosen breast cancer as their cause to work for this year. The
chosen organization, the Red Devils are a superb group of people that offer such a great resource of
assistance, information and help to cancer patients and their families. I am honored to be part of BEST
and their work to raise funds for the Red Devils.

What I'm Working On: Van Wagoner Studios

This past weekend I swung into production mode in the studio working a marathon 48 hours. I'm getting ready for the holidays and having a lot of fun with the clay.

My work is built primarily with slabs and embellished with unique photographic images. This most recent work gets away from the simplicity of a platter or the ease of a small bowl. These forms are geometric puzzles put together with many small stiff slabs of clay. Each one cut and fitted to the last until a closed shape is created.

Each form is inspired by the vernacular architecture which will be printed on it's surface. They are primarily sculptural, though each has a hole (or two) in the top and could serve as a vase–very appropriate for dried wildflowers found in the field. The vases pictured above are in-progress awaiting their barn image.

Working with polymer clay can be a joyous but laborious task. I look to the works of others for inspiration in my medium. One of my favorite Etsy artisans is Stéphanie Kilgast. Her shop, PetitPlat (translated as Petite Plate) is a wonderful medley of miniature foods and jewelry. Having a background in architecture Stéphanie decided in 2007 to find a new hobby and immersed herself in the wonderful world if 1:12 miniature scale work. The result is a whimsical and dainty look into the mind of a wonderful artist.

Tutorial - Draw String Bags

We have a situation in my house: too many toy sets with lots of parts that are too easy to mix up with the other toy sets with lots of parts. The answer to our dilemma? Easy-to-make drawstring bags. It's always nice to find a storage solution that's simple for the whole family to use, and the uses for these handy bags are certainly not limited to toys. They are perfect for travel or the gym and can be used for makeup, crayons, cell phone chargers . . . anything that just needs a home. These directions are for a 10" x 10" drawstring bag, but you can simply adjust the measurements to make a bag that is larger or smaller.

To make one 10"-square bag, you'll need:

1/3 yard quilting weight fabric (you will have enough fabric leftover for a second bag)

1 yard ribbon or cord

Sewing machine

Scissors

Iron
Straight Pins
Large Safety Pin

Directions:

1. Cut the fabric into a 12" x 22" rectangle.

2. Fold in half, right side of the fabric out, and iron the crease. Measure 2" down from the top and pin.

3. Sew the two sides, leaving the 2" margin unsewn.

4. Trim the fabric around the two sewn sides to about 1/4"

5. Turn the bag inside out and press. Sew the two sides again to enclose the seam (but still leave that 2" margin untouched). Snip threads.

6. Now you will make the sleeve for the drawstring. With the bag still turned inside-out, fold the edge of the 2" margin back and press. Next, fold a 1/2" margin down all along the top and press. Finally, fold the fabric down 1", press, and pin.

7. Sew around the entire top of the bag.

8. Secure the safety pin to one end of the ribbon or cord and use it to thread the drawstring through the channel.

9. Remove safety pin, tie the drawstring with a knot, and trim the ends.

10. Fill your cute bag and enjoy!
