Arts, Crafts, Music, AND the Beach?

While I don't normally head to the ocean until the weather is VERY warm, this year I might make an exception and take a trip in the Spring for Ocean City SpringFest which takes place in the beginning of May.

SpringFest 2011 is May 5-8 - four dynamic days - of delicious food, live entertainment and unique arts and crafts under four huge big top tents located in the Inlet Lot at the south end of Ocean City’s famous Boardwalk.

Plus, there is live music on TWO stages! While most of the music and entertainment is free, the headline acts do require ticket purchase.

George Jones for Friday May 6 . The ticket prices are $50, 45, 40, 35, 30, 25, 20.
Richard Marx for Saturday May 7. The tickets prices are $40,35,30,25,20.

Tickets are in-person sales only at Convention Center Box Office on 40th Street in Ocean City . Ticket sales at http://www.ticketmaster.com/ or 800-551-7328.

Baltimore With Babes- Pumpkin Fest

It won't be long before we're all house-bound. And I think that beautiful Fall weekends are nature's way of saying "Get out while you can!" What better reason to spend the day outside than this...

Irvine Nature Center will host its 26th annual PumpkinFest, a harvest festival, on Saturday October, 16th and Sunday, October 17th. The autumnal celebration features pumpkin picking, pony rides, live music and other outdoor fun.

The rain-or-shine event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Each child costs $10, which includes a free pumpkin. Adults and children younger than 3 are admitted free. Parking is also free.

Harvest festival attendees will revel in a mixture of activities, including scarecrow-making, hay rides, face painting, animal encounters, puppet shows and guided nature walks. MusicHealsUs will include visitors in a drum circle, and Fiddlesticks and the Gerry Gessie Duo will perform acoustic folk music. There will also be nature-themed art projects for children. All activities are free with paid admission.

"PumpkinFest is great opportunity for families to explore the outdoors during one of the most beautiful seasons of the calendar year - fall," said Irvine's Executive Director Peggy F. O'Neill. She added that the event is fun for all ages, and makes a great weekend outing for families large and small.

Irvine Nature Center is located on 116 acres of woodlands, wetlands and meadows in the breathtaking Caves Valley area. Open year round, Irvine offers opportunities for visitors to explore nature, including special events like PumpkinFest, daily classes of nature-based curriculum for 3 to 5 year olds, public programs, summer camps, field trips, green weddings and an interactive natural history museum. For more information, visit www.ExploreNature.org.

Heads for Haiti Show at Spur Design!

I am thrilled to be participating in the "Heads for Haiti" show opening April 10th in Baltimore. The opening is hosted and conceived by Spur Design in Hampden. 100 artists, 100 images of heads, $100 each, to raise $10,000 for doctors without borders. There will also be a poster produced including all of the art for sale for $50. The 100 artists involved are an amazingly accomplished lot, and the prices of these little pieces is truly a steal, not to mention for a great cause. My contribution, titled "Alice Cries", a study for an Alice in Wonderland piece, was painted in acrylic and is 7" x 9", pictured here.

To see a list of participating artists and more info about the event go to the Heads for Haiti site.

And if you are not already familiar with Spur Design, Joyce Hessleberth and Dave Plunkert run an amazing design business and they are accomplished illustrators as well.

Un(Bound): An Altered Books Competition

altered book spread

Feeling creative? So get in the act! Grab one of those unwanted books and turn it into a work of art. The Enoch Pratt Free Library is proud to announce its first ever Altered Books Competition.

An altered book is any book, old or new that has been recycled by creative means into a work of art. They can be rebound, painted, cut, burned, folded, added to, collaged in, rubber stamped, drilled or otherwise adorned. Altered books may be as simple as adding a drawing or text to a page, or as complex as creating an intricate book sculpture.

All entries to the competition should be received no later than 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 26. Prizes will be awarded to the top three altered books. The top 15 altered books will be on display at the Central Library during the month of October.

Support for the Pratt’s Altered Book Competition comes from Art for Life, Atomic Books, Bowerbox Press, Creative Alliance, Doubledutch Boutique, The Helmand Restaurant, Joe Squared Pizza, Landmark Theatres, Mr. Yogato, Post Typography, Tag Galleries, Tapas Teatro, Squidfire, Urbanite Magazine, Utrecht Art Supplies, The Wine Source, and Zeke's Coffee.

For more information, guidelines and a registration form for the Pratt’s Altered Books Competition, visit the Pratt Library website.
