This Weekend - Arts on Foot

The 17th annual Arts on Foot Market in the vibrant Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington DC will happen this year from Thurs. September 10 through Saturday, September 12. Artists will display and sell their work all three days, but the actual festival, which will highlight the largest number of artists, happens on Saturday only. The Art Market will span four city blocks between 7th and F Street NW with the Center for American Art and Portraiture as its backdrop. This is my first year to be involved and I’m very excited to be doing this show along with Shannon of Sweet Pepita and Jen McBrien of Jenny Jen 42.


Here is some of what you can expect to do….

- Browse and shop the three-day juried art market featuring fine artists selling a diverse selection of their original works.

- Participate in cool, hands-on arts and crafts and other family-friendly activities at the cultural corridors supported by The Pink Line Project.

- Taste signature dishes from 30 top DC restaurants at the restaurant sampling courts.

- Watch DC's premier chefs demonstrate their culinary talents in the O Organics cooking as art pavilion.

- Sample a variety of international wines and learn from the experts in the world market wine area.

- Enjoy a blend of exceptional local music and eclectic performances on two stages.

- Explore the neighborhood showcase of Penn Quarter cultural venues with special programs and activities for children and adults.

The first store I made a favorite when I joined etsy almost exactly one year ago today, was Jacquelineknits. I haven’t actually bought one, but I am wishing for that adorable little knitted jacket for my apple or better yet my precious August peach! Of course, I could never put one in Ian’s lunch, God forbid an eighth grade boy would find something so…well, girlie, in his lunch box. But who cares, I’ll pack my lunch even if I do eat at home. Her knits are so simple and honest, at once silly and functional and just so darn lovable! Somehow the fruit jacket seems like something from years ago, but our generation gets to claim it! She makes other knitted pieces, too, like a tea bag cozy, a knitted coffee sleeve and a candy case! Who doesn’t need one of those! Thanks, Jacqueline, for inspiring happiness!

Featured Etsy Seller: Moon Raven Arts

Creating an Etsy shop opened so many doors for me. It got me out of the house, brought me into a community that inspired me to take a risk, and most importantly, connected me with other hard working creative people who have become dear friends. So last year, when my friend Rosalyn told me that she took the leap and opened up her own Etsy shop, Moon Raven Arts, I was so so excited for her.

Twenty Things - Linda's Paperie

Twenty things you didn't know about Linda, of Linda's Paperie.

1. I married my college sweetheart.
2. I have 3 children and I have mixed feelings about them going back to school. It was a fun summer.
3. I am a cat person.
4. I love everything about paper, from the beautiful patterns and colors to how it smells.
5. I have driven over an hour for a specific type of paper. I have also gone through the stores incoming boxes (with their permission) so I can buy the newest paper.
6. Pizza is my favorite food.
7. I am not the greatest cook but I am getting better.
8. I love Harry Potter and have read all of the books multiple times.
9. I was born and raised in New York. I miss it sometimes.

Ten Question Tuesday - Tasha McKelvey

Hello! Who are you? Give us the 411 about yourself.
I’m Tasha McKelvey and I am ceramic artist & designer. I live in Richmond, Virginia, with my husband and our beagle. I also teach pottery and art classes sometimes.

When/how did you start your business?
I started my pottery business right after I finished college in 2000. I worked as a potter’s assistant in high school and as soon as I took my first ceramics class in college I knew I wanted to be ceramic artist.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I like to spend my free time gardening, working on our new old house & cooking.

What first made you want to become an artist?
I have always wanted to be an artist, it was never really a choice. I love working with my hands and making things.

What inspires you?
Currently I draw my inspiration from contemporary ceramics, illustration and nature.

What's your favorite thing about your craft?
I love opening my kiln after a glaze firing, it’s like Christmas morning every time. When you glaze something you have a picture in your mind of what it will look like after firing it, but it rarely comes out exactly as you expected. Every piece is unique and a surprise.

Where would we most likely find you working?
In my new little studio on the second floor of my house. We bought our first house this Spring and I moved my studio to the new house in May. I love being able to work from home!

What's your favorite music to listen to while you work?
I listen to a lot of Sun Volt, Flaming Lips and Mates of State in the studio.

What's your favorite thing right now?
My garden is my favorite thing right now. I never owned a place before so I didn’t see any reason to invest much time in a garden. Now I am enjoying planning, planting and watering the garden.

If you could have one wish granted for the craft community, what would it be?
For the general public to have a better understanding of the value of handmade work, but I think there is a growing awareness.
