I Heart Art: Baltimore

BEST is so excited to announce a new collaboration in Baltimore, intended to promote education, outreach and support of the city’s vibrant community of artists and artisans. This program brings BEST together with Etsy and the Maryland Institute College of Art, specifically, their new graduate program designed for artists and crafters seeking deeper understanding of how to run their creative businesses. There will be some great free workshops associated with the program, and we'll be posting the full schedule here on the blog soon. We'll also be launching an informational site just for the I Heart Art program, which will be live early 2011.

To kick off I Heart Art: Baltimore, there will be a meet-n-greet party on MICA campus on November 19, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. ET. Food, drink, music and a craft activity will be included in the festivities taking place in Brown Center’s Leidy Atrium, 1301. W. Mount Royal Ave.

Come meet Vanessa and Morgan from Etsy and members of the Baltimore Etsy Street Team. There will be a raffle full of goodies from BEST artists, MICA, and Etsy, so get there early! And don't forget to bring your business cards!

Picture This! Imagery in Enamel

Intense workshops have to be my favorite classes. I love cramming as much information as I can into a weekend and using that information to actually create something fantastic. This workshop makes me wish I was still making jewelry!


Maybe you know enameling basics, or maybe you're an expert but you're looking for a way to make your work more uniquely yours. Learn how to bring out your inner illustrator or photographer or painter with Picture This! Imagery in Enamel with Mary Chuduk at Maryland Institute College of Art, Jewelry Center at Meadow Mills.

Explore a fresh approach to drawing and painting in enamel, using ceramic pencils, line drawing, sepia decals, and painted over-glaze colors for delicate color washes and details. Experiment with the subtle and brilliant colors of sifted and wet-packed enamels for both recognizable and abstract imagery, on flat and slightly formed copper or silver. Enhance the images with lusters, inlays of metallic foils and leaf, cloisonné wire, and fine copper mesh. Drawing and/or painting experience is helpful but not required.

Laure Drogoul: Follies, Predicaments, and Other Conundrums

An event not to miss this week is the opening of Follies, Predicaments, and Other Conundrums: The Works of Laure Drogoul. Drogoul is a 1981 graduate of the Rinehart School at the Maryland Institute, College of Art. She is Baltimore-based interdisciplinary artist, who is best known for her participatory and sensorial works that are articulated through sculpture, installation, performance, and Web-based media. She is the first Rinehart Graduate to be honored such a large scale retrospective. In addition, she performs and organizes the 14Karat Cabaret, which has been a center of the Baltimore avant-garde art scene for the past nineteen years.

This exhibition was curated by Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) Exhibitions Department Director Gerald Ross, and organized and produced in partnership with students in the Exhibition Development Seminar (EDS) under the guidance of course instructor Glenn Shrum '08.

MICA Art Mart

Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) will be hosting the annual MICA Art Market on Wednesday, December 10–Saturday, December 13, noon–6 p.m. in Brown Center's Leidy Atrium located at 1301 Mount Royal Avenue. This four-day art sale features works of art and design created by MICA students, faculty, and staff. More than 150 exceptional artists will have a diverse array of prints, posters, sculpture, stationery, book arts, ceramics, t-shirts, jewelry, textiles, children's items, and more for sale during the event.

The MICA Art Market provides an excellent opportunity for shoppers and collectors to find new works by emerging artists as well as collectables from leading artists in their respective fields. The Art Market fosters student professional development, peer to peer networking, and a percentage of the proceeds will provide funding for need-based student scholarships.
