Fairy princess Kolleen will be sprinkling fairy dust and waiving her magic glue gun to help transform your little girl into a crafty fairy princess!

Create a custom made colorful whispy skirt using grosgrain ribbon and fluffy tulle. We'll make a matching fairy crown to top it off!

Places to Go: Celebrating 130 Years of Craft at the Women’s Industrial Exchange

It's easy to find handcrafted goods this time of the year. There are craft shows every weekend. But if it's the middle of the week, or maybe January or June, or you just want to see some new artists, the Woman's Industrial Exchange Gift Shop at 333 North Charles Street in Baltimore  is the place to go. 

For 130 years, the Woman's Industrial Exchange has been supporting the handmade movement. Its original mission was to provide an outlet for women to supplement their income by selling their handcrafted goods. The Exchange now provides both men and women crafters with both a place to sell their products and a place to learn new skills to enhance their businesses. This video, which appeared on a local TV channel in celebration of the 130th Anniversary, tells some of the story.             

There’s a lot to choose from at the gift shop. Just a few examples: There is jewelry made from buttons from Treena Moore (who also manages the shop); bags of all kinds made from rescued fabric from Phyllis Smith; plates, business card holders, mugs and more from Elizabeth Langsfeld. There are toddler and baby items and all sorts of toys. There are the wonderful hand-painted silk scarves of Susan Brandt. And Wood Art for Living just started showing their clocks, bowls and kitchen utensils at the shop.

In addition to the wide array of crafts, the Woman’s Industrial Exchange building houses two restaurants. The Women’s Industrial Kitchen reopened last year with a seasonal menu that features many old-time favorites. The restaurant is open for lunch from 11-3. Jack and Zach’s, a restaurant that features organic and local food is open from 7:30 to 4 on weekdays and from 10-4 on Sunday.

The Women’s Industrial Exchange Gift Shop is open Monday from 11-4, Tuesday-Friday from 11-6 and Saturday 11-5.

Come in and find that unique gift you’re looking for or treat yourself to something special, knowing that your purchase helps support local craft.

Shop Local - Love & Glitter

The sign on the outside of the door says it all: "Come in and see the sparkly"how could you not go in??

This shop is one of my favorites, because everything you find inside is handmade by local artists!  There are many one of a kind pieces inside, and everywhere you look, something is glimmering, beckoning you to it's table!  Along with the hot pink walls, this shop is just tons of fun to browse through, and pick up some great gifts for a loved one- or even yourself!

 

Love & Glitter is owned and run by Leslie Putman, who also contributes work to the shops inventory!  You can find them at 8132 Main Street in Ellicott City- a new location they've recently expanded into.  Open from Wednesday through Sunday (for hours visit their web page) you won't be disappointed you stopped in and took in the sparkly goodness!!

Shop Local-Terra Firma

Many jewelry artist in the Baltimore area already know about Bill and his shop Terra Firma but for those of you that don't, he is like Baltimore's own treasure! His shop may not be fancy and not the easiest to find but he sure has the best selection of jewelry supplies this side of the Rio Grande. Not only can you find a great selection of beads and findings but he carries raw silver materials (including chain by the inch, wire and sheet) and a great selection of tools. Everything and everything from simple hammers and pliers to torches and flex shafts. Bill is my first 'go to' for supplies. You can't beat the experience of hand selecting your tools and materials. Plus, Bill and his staff are super nice and a wealth of information.

Shop Local: Didn't Your Mama Tell You to Wear a Hat?

The Sprout has decided he is a many of man hats, and while this is great coverage for his noggin, his style choices aren't always shall we say- stylin'? Enter Born To Love Clothing! Stylish infant and toddler fedoras and skate visor beanies! What I love best is that the line was started by a stay at home Mom, with help from a creative Dad, and all inspired by their son! Resulting in a hip entrepreneurial family business! My favorites are the black fedora and tan argyle visor. You can check out the entire line at Urban Baby Runway which coincidentally is a locally owned online boutique started by another stay at home Mom!
