Artscape is this weekend!

Artscape is America's largest free arts festival, and it just happens to be hosted by our own lovely city of Baltimore!  Friday, July 20th, through Sunday, July 22nd, the area surrounding MICA will be transformed by art installations, exhibits indoors and out, live music stages, craft and food vendors, parades, and more!  There is really something for everyone, so bring the whole family for a great experience right in the heart of Charm City.  BEST members Tigerlily Shop, Yummy & Company, Jennyjen 42, Charms City Company, Mackwire, and Open Eyes Press will be setup in the Artists' Market selling their handmade goods.  We hope to see you there!

ArtScape is here! Right now!

We are all set up and finally relaxing after a fury of making. Come down and see us, get a jumpstart on the weekend.

Today’s question of the day:
Artscape is known for being the hottest weekend in July, any tricks for
staying cool?

Yummy & Company (new item:feathers on chevrons in my newest color-plum!)
I freeze a bunch of water bottles before I leave in the morning and drink them all day long!

Greenstar Studio (new felt plush)
Fans. Lots of fans. I've worked out a pretty good "cross breeze" system over the past 6 years. Also, Ice. Lots and lots of ice.

Jersey Girl Design (Sparkly ring in brown)
I've got my little misting fan...and am hoping the rumors of a kiddie pool are true :)

Design by Night (Peacock facinator)
Design by Night's big "tool" purchase this year was a whoop daddy top of the line Coleman cooler on wheels with a retractable handle. I plan on loading that bad boy up with all sorts of chilled beverages (maybe some rum punch) and a few freezer packs that I can strategically place to cool my butt off!

Two days to Artscape!

Two days to Artscape! Time to finish up what’s on the table and take a deep breath.

Today’s question of the day:
Will you be exhibiting anything new that we should be looking for (and snatching up before they are gone?)

VW Studios (glass potatoes and porcelain pillow)
Oh yes... All new! And very different. Concurrent to the ceramic work I usually bring to art fairs, I have been working on blown glass sculptural forms for the last three years. This Artscape I am bringing a bushel of glass potatoes and some other lusciously colored glass vegetables. The only ceramics you will see are the porcelain pillows designed to display the produce.

Lanabella (new Mojito lip balm)
I have a new lip balm Miami Mojito as an homage to our new locale and some Natty Boh Beer soap!

Fuzzy Mug (new tank tops)
I have some new, really soft, organic cotton tank tops with rabbits, cats and roosters. I'll also have a few new tote bags and journal designs. I am always my most creative right before a big event, so I am sure I will come up with a few more things this week, too.

Countdown to Artscape!

Artscape is just days away and with so many BEST members participating this year (some new to Artscape, some are old vets) we thought it would be fun to get their take on things through a series of questions .

Today’s question of the day:
What most excites (or terrifies) you about being a vendor at Artscape?

Open Eyes Press (new smaller size screen prints)
I am mostly excited about being able to meet lots of people. The only thing I'm really terrified about is the anticipated heatwave!

Namoo (new baby ball mobile)
I have been a big fan of ArtScape since I moved to Maryland about 6 years ago and keep such fond memories of the event. This is my first time being a vendor at ArtScape. Being a part of a show that I had always enjoyed excites me the most but also terrifies me for the same reason.

Whoop (fabric and bead necklace)
I'm most excited about meeting other people who love handmade goods.

Tigerlilly Shop (Kimono Button Ring)
The sheer hours of the show are both exhilarating and exhausting.

Artscape in 3... 2...

It all starts tomorrow at noon. So if your artist friends are acting more like ants or focused bees instead of the easy going people you know, this is why. We're getting ready.

You'll find many BEST and Charm City Craft Mafia members selling their wares in the Artist's Market as well as the DIY section on Charles St. Keep walking north on Charles, and you'll be in my favorite (and my daughter's favorite) part of the festival, Midway. I can't even tell you how long we spent last year at one artist's installation feeding a giant fake bunny (I think) carrots. Mesmerizing.

From Urbanite...
One popular attraction is Midway, which for the third year spills its carnival sideshowesque flare onto the Charles Street bridge. For this year's version, a crew of about forty local artists have worked individually and collaboratively to create an otherworldly experience, with skate ramp/golf hole, a life-size Whack-a-Mole game, and a stuffed animal-filled chill-out room.

Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts visual arts coordinator Jim Lucio was responsible for assembling this year's diverse crew of artists. "I'm really excited to see the whole thing come together as one big piece," he says. The sixteen installations are "both conceptual and functional"—and depend on audience participation, as in Alisa Alig's "Stink Hole: A Subterrestrial Quest," in which safarioutfitted guides lead visitors through a passageway filled with all sorts of odd creatures, peculiar plant life, and strange peepholes.

There's also Clark Agre and C. Christopher Rouse's shooting gallery, where passersby can aim laser guns at hand-painted ducks and old appliances. (Look out: Some of this rifle-fodder may talk back.) The duo also created a pulsating, 20-foot-by-15-foot kinetic balloon sculpture to hover above Midway. And if the excitement of the festival is too much, take a moment to recline on the analyst's couch in "Art Therapy." Artist Jeremy Crawford's installation features a contemplation room where Artscapers can ponder their existence—or at least figure out which event to visit next.

Artscape 2009- In Place

In Place, an exhibit of photographic work that interprets, alters and responds to place, will be shown in Gormley Gallery at College of Notre Dame of Maryland starting Saturday, July 11, and running through Friday, July 31. The exhibit is part of the Artscape visual arts programming.

Jennifer Dorsey’s color photographs explore the interior architecture of ordinary, contemporary spaces. Her most recent project focuses on the high school as a place where contemporary life intersects with multiple histories and traditions.

The photographic collages and installations of Jennie Fleming depict fleeting moments caught for examination, which are then and then sliced, shuffled, repeated and reordered. Her work scrutinizes unseen or neglected facets of a location— its mood, level of intimacy, the intricacy of pattern and texture, and the effect of light and time on a place. She has exhibited at School 33 Art Center and Arlington Arts Center.

Using photography to document ephemeral site-specific sculptures Leslie Furlong’s Survey Series re-contextualizes some of the tools that we use to alter our landscape. The result is imagery that can be seen as incongruous and playful. Furlong has exhibited nationally at the Corcoran Museum of Art, Bradbury Gallery, and locally at C. Grimaldis Gallery, Maryland Art Place, Contemporary Museum, and the Sondheim Artscape Prize: 2009 Finalists Exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

The panoramic photographs of Sofia Silva survey the places of the suburban American landscape on the premise that much can be learned about our culture by examining the environments that we have created and tolerate. Her work has been exhibited in both Argentina and the United States in solo and group exhibitions, including C. Grimaldis Gallery, Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland Art Place, and Anthropic Deserts at VVVgallery, Buenos Aires.

The photographs in Edward Winter’s series The Living Box depict domestic spaces with an uncanny placement of everyday objects. Moments of light and manifestations of the outdoors complicate the viewers’ relationship to his subject matter. Winter has exhibited at Goucher College and Maryland Institute College of Art, Curator’s Office in DC, and is a recipient of a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award.

Opening reception will take place this Saturday, July 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. The reception is open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Free admission. For more information, call 410-532-5582 or log onto www.ndm.edu/gormleygallery.

The End.

Artscape is over. It was great to meet so many new friends, and see so many old ones. Thanks so much to all of you who stopped by to say hello. We had so much fun, even though we were just a bit crazier than usual from the 100 degree heat, smoke from the barbeque, and the pounding rhythms of the DJ Culture booth. We'll see you again soon!
